In the night of 20 June 1756 , at the behest of Siraj-ud-Daula (the Nawab of the Bengal) 147 British were captured at Fort William by the army and incarcerated in a room of 18 feet long and 14 feet 10 inches wide in Calcutta. When the room opened on 23 June 156, only 23 out of 146 British survived. The event described by Z. Holwell is known as Black Hole Tragedy (Hindi- Kalkothari Ki Trasadi).
